SPEAKER KROWINSKI STATEMENT ON PASSAGE OF GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION LEGISLATION

Montpelier, Vt. – Today, House Speaker Jill Krowinski issued the following statement on the tri-partisan passage of gun-violence prevention bill, S.30:

“Today, the House overwhelmingly passed gun safety legislation that would protect Vermonters while respecting our long history of hunting and responsible gun ownership. S.30 takes steps to ensure that guns are kept out of the hands of individuals with a history of domestic abuse or other dangerous behaviors, and out of our hospitals where people are seeking care and the presence of guns is unnecessary.

“This bill takes a much-needed step in closing the “Charleston Loophole,” ensuring that law enforcement agencies have time to conduct a background check before someone can purchase a firearm.

“S.30 is also critical to protect victims of domestic abuse. It clarifies that — as part of an emergency relief from abuse order — a judge has the authority to order a defendant to relinquish their firearms while the order is in effect. Data clearly shows that half of all Vermont homicides are related to domestic violence, with many involving the use of a firearm. This provision will help keep Vermonters safe during the days following the filing of a restraining order — a period of time we know can be particularly volatile and is especially traumatic for victims.

“I am so appreciative of the House Judiciary Committee and their diligent work to get this important piece of legislation to the place it is today. I am hopeful that our Senate colleagues will support our additions to S.30 and we can get this health and safety bill to the Governor’s desk.”
